In the summer the crossing is generally calm, though those who are sensitive are advised to take a dramamine an hour before departure. Dolphins and whales are spotted fairly often, and the boat captains are good about slowing and turning
to get a good view.

Most first-timers try to get a seat on the upper (exposed) decks, only to come back inside once the winds on the channel start to get cool. Grab a seat inside, leave your coat, and then walk the decks. All the boats have snack bars with cocktail service.
Important: if you show up less than 15 minutes before departure time, there is a good chance that your ticket will have been sold to a stand-by passenger
Island Express Helicopters
Experienced pilots, with a fleet of 3 comfortably upholstered jet helicopters. Especially on days with rough water this is the way to go.

  • The FASTEST way to get to Catalina.
  • Departs: both San Pedro and Long Beach boat terminals.
  • Length of trip: fourteen minutes.
  • Schedule: available hourly from 8 am till sunset.
  • Fares: $66.50 + tax one way, $124.00 + tax round trip, for adults, kids andseniors (fares provided by operator and are subject to change without notice).
  • Restrictions: Check in half hour before flight. 25 lb. baggage limit per person.
  • Fun value: flying over the L.A. Harbor is quite scenic, as is the approach to the Island. The helicopters seat six passengers plus pilot, so you get a good view.

Note: The helicopters land at Pebbly Beach, about 3/4 of a mile from Avalon. If you want a taxi to take you into town, tell the pilot. He will radio in a call mid-channel so that the taxi will be waiting at Pebbly when you arrive. The taxi charge to town is $6.30 for two passengers, and 50 cents for every additional passenger up to six.
