Birding on Catalina Island![]()

This Web page will report new bird sightings, ecology and behavior for Catalina Island as discoveries are made by the director and naturalist, volunteers, students and others interested in birds.
- Fall migration has begun on Catalina. On July 17th 75+ Western Sandpipers still showing the summer arctic breeding plumage were feeding on the mudflat at Catalina Harbor. For those interested, Catalina Harbor is also nick-named "Cat Harbor" or "Two Harbors." The Sandpipers were observed from 3 pm to 6 pm by Roy van de Hoek and Paula Schiffman. In addition, 1 Black-bellied Plover, 1 Willet, 1 Whimbrel and 1 Greater Yellowlegs were observed feeding with the Western Sandpipers. This observation fits well with seeing a Marbled Godwit a day earlier the same day about 2 miles at sea off of Avalon by Roy van de Hoek and Paula Schiffman.
- Barn Swallows have started their second nesting at the Interpretive Center on July 7th, 1996.
- Pacific Slope Flycatcher nesting fledged 2 young on July 15th, 1996.
